Smuggled Drugs Coming To Gwinnett; the Commission Yawns
Has anyone seen Chairman Charles Bannister? Didn’t think so.
"The vast majority of marijuana that is available in the United States has crossed the southern border at some point," said Cochise County, Arizona attorney Edward Rheinheimer. "The 100 pound load of marijuana that comes across the border ends up in a middle school in Atlanta, Georgia."

Gwinnett Judges Exercise Poor Judgment
We’re in tough times, economically speaking. It makes sense to look at every public contract to see if any extra pennies can be pinched. If that is what Gwinnett’s State Court judges were trying to do when it picked a new private probation company, it sure doesn’t look that way.

Engage Gwinnett Report to be Finalized Friday
The EG committee will vote at its final meeting on Friday, April 23 to approve its recommendations to the Commission on the county’s financial situation. The report is almost 100 pages in length and includes several dissenting opinions…. including mine, which I will also publish here and at TalkGwinnett.com after the full report is published.

Police Arrest Lawrenceville Man Second Time on Indecency Charge
When interviewed, Hosch said that his only regret was that his mug shot only captured his “likeness” from the neck up. Watch out, ladies; Hosch is already out on bail:
A Lawrenceville man recently arrested for public indecency was already out on bond for the same charge in a separate incident, police said.
Lawrenceville police arrested 32-year-old Quentin Felando Hosch on Friday afternoon at the Wal-Mart on Collins Hill Road. According to reports, a store security guard watched Hosch follow three women around the store, exposing himself and masturbating.

287(g) a Victim of Its Own Effectiveness?
I read the GAO report cited in this AJC article, and so can you (PDF). The report did not criticize the program’s effectiveness, as alleged by AJC reporter Rhonda Cook. The report did criticize the program’s administration and, maybe, rightfully so. If the 287(g) program was intended to focus law enforcement resources on only the most violent or repetitive illegal alien offenders, then so be it.

State Senate Passes Temporary Assessment Cap Bill
The Georgia State Senate has passed an amended version of HB-233, a bill to prohibit increases in the assessed value of property for the next two years. The changes will probably have to be reconciled with the House version, but the vote puts the bill one step closer to passage.
Almost every Senator from my home county of Gwinnett, both Republican and Democrat, voted FOR this bill. That is extremely unfortunate, as this article at TalkGwinnett.com explains.
Gwinnett property owners already face an estimated 2-mill increase this year. If it passes, HB-233 will add another .02 mills– approximately $22– on a tax bill that is already increasing by $144 for the owner of a $200,000 home.
