Steele: Republicans `silly and racist`

Former Maryland Lt. Governor Michael Steele has reportedly told Georgia Republicans in a conference call on Friday afternoon that Republicans looked `silly and racist` on the issue of illegal immigration.

I suppose that he is referring to the typically conservative position of `enforcement first` and that illegal immigrants should be treated as lawbreakers.

Steele is a candidate for chairmanship of the Republican National Committee, a selection that will occur in January 2009.

Steele’s comments are, to me, an indication that a GOP under his leadership would continue to drift aimlessly toward the left, leaving most conservative Americans without a political party that reflects their views.

The bigger question: is there a single Republican leader who hasn’t become a spineless, neutered mass of cowardice?

    Bob,

I assume you got that from me via Twitter. Let me put Steele’s comment in context.

Steele said because there was no clear message from the GOP on illegal immigration people on the fringe were out there speaking and in some cases said some silly and racist things. Democrats used that to make the entire Party look silly and racist and with no real leadership in the issue the Party was harmed. Steele would seek to unify the Party’s message on issues such as that thus preventing extremists from being representative of the Party.

That doesn’t fit well into the 140 characters that Twitter allows. Perhaps I could have tweeted it better.

Steele would certainly not take the GOP to the left.

Thank you for clarifying his comment, Buzz. With today’s GOP leadership, it is easy to think the worst.
