Absolut arrogance and the advertising agency behind the reconquista ad
A firestorm is erupting over an ad campaign by the makers of Absolut vodka in which Mexico is depicted– “in an Absolut (perfect) world”– as again extending to the borders that existed in the late 1800’s.
At that time, the lands claimed by Mexico included California, Arizona and most of Texas. The current borders are the result of a treaty, the purchase of land from Mexico and the forgiving of a sizeable debt to the U.S.
Absolut has posted a response at its web site to which hundreds of former drinkers of Absolut vodka have replied… with passion. Wrote one: “Now that you’ve shot yourself in the foot, what’s next? Cut off your nose to spite your face?”
